The 12 Olympian Gods also known as Dodecatheon (which means twelve gods in Greek) were the main deities that lived at the mountain Olympus. The Olympians gained their supremacy in a war of gods in which Zeus led his siblings to victory over the Titans.
Zeus was the greatest of all and he was father of the Gods. He was the God of weather, protector of the visitors,of the family and fertility. He was worshiped as the wise god who was responsible of the fate of humans and in charge of maintaining the morality of the world. His symbols were the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and oak.
Hera: Wife of Zeus and protector of the marriage and of the faith between the spouses.
Poseidon: The God of the sea, the rivers, the sources of drinking water and in general of the element of water. He was associated with dolphins and three-pronged fish spears (trident).
Demeter: The Goddess of the earth, the agriculture, the flora, the food, the marriage and protector of the farmers.
Hestia: The Goddess of the hearth, the family, the house as a concept, the fire and of the textile arts.
Aphrodite: The Goddess of beauty and love.
Athena: The Goddess of wisdom, arts, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, justice warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, crafts and skill.
Apollo: The God of the divination art, the music and dance, the morality and logic. He was also a therapist God.
Ares: The God of war and battle.
Artemis: The Goddess of the wild nature, the hunting, the animals and fertility. She often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her.
Hephaestus: The god of fire, the volcanoes, the metallurgy and protector of the artisans, blacksmiths, craftsmen. He was making the weapons of the Gods.
Hermes: The messenger of the Gods, a herald and the person who was driving the souls of the dead to Hades (hell). Also he was he protector of the trade, the travelers and thieves. His symbols include the rooster and the tortoise, his purse or pouch, winged sandals, winged cap and in his left hand he was holding the herald’s staff, the Greek kerykeion.
