Sounion is one of the most magical places that someone can go, and is clearly one of the best places for the residents of Attica. Sounion is essentially a place of high energy that can give everyone something special if he/she gives enough time to him/herself. At the most southern part of Attica, Sounion is the area that everything is possible, where the sea and earth become one. Today the area of Sounion is a tourist destination for many people who come to admire the ancient temple and the region. A myth says that at this point the mighty king Aegeus committed suicide when he saw the black sails of the fleet of his child waving and coming back to town because he thought that his son died and did not come back from Crete where the citizens of Athens were forced to send their children to be sacrificed at the court of King Minos. The sea was named after the king Aegeus, the well-known Aegean sea. Many say that Aegeus did not fall from there at the sea since it is unlikely to have been in that spot. They think that he must have watched the boats from the Acropolis and when he saw that the sails were of black color he eventually fell off the rock. For this reason the Athenians had built a small temple in his honor. However, the prevailing theory of the myth is that Aegeus fell off the cliff of Sounion from his grief. Theseus, son of Aegeus, who had defeated the Minotaur when he was returning from Crete he was accompanied by his beloved Ariadne who eventually decided to stay with the god Dionysus on the island of Naxos. It is said that due to the pain of Theseus for what happened or due to a curse of Ariadne, he forgot to change the sails from black to white, so his father gave this bad end of his life.
